Puppy Development & Preparation
Detailed Puppy Stages and Preparation Tips
Weeks 0–2: New Born Stage
At this age, your puppy is with mum, growing rapidly. Towards the end of week 2, their eyes and ears will begin to open, but vision and hearing will remain limited. They’ll receive their first worming treatment at 2 weeks, and their nails may be clipped to protect mum.
Weeks 3–4: Early Development
Your puppy will still nurse but will start eating semi-solid food and drinking small amounts of water. Playfulness increases, with tail wagging, barking attempts, and more awareness of sounds. Milk teeth will begin to emerge, and their second worming treatment will be given at 4 weeks. Puppies instinctively avoid soiling their sleeping area, making it a great time to introduce puppy pad training.
Weeks 5–6: Becoming Independent
Your puppy will start to rely less on mum for food and will be well into the weaning process. Playfighting with siblings will be common, and they’ll become more aware of their surroundings making it a great time to introduce crate training.
Weeks 7–8: Ready to Go Home
At 8 weeks, your puppy will be fully weaned and ready to join your family. They’ll have their first vet check, receive their initial vaccinations, and be microchipped to ensure they’re healthy and safe.
