Eye Testing for Inherited Diseases

The British Veterinary Association (BVA), Kennel Club UK (KC), and the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS) work together to promote eye testing for identifying inherited eye diseases in both pedigree and crossbreed dogs.

By adhering to these guidelines, we uphold the highest standards in breeding practices, prioritising the health and wellbeing of our dogs and their offspring.

All of our CameronCavs breeding dogs have an UNAFFECTED test result.

Why Eye Testing Matters

By screening our breeding adults, we can gather vital information to help reduce or eliminate the likelihood of passing inherited eye diseases to future generations. This proactive approach is a cornerstone of responsible breeding, ensuring healthier outcomes for puppies.

Schedule A and the Eye Scheme

Schedule A is a comprehensive list of breeds and the specific eye conditions known to be inherited within those breeds. Under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme:

A certified veterinary optometrist examines the dog's eyes for signs of inherited diseases.

Results are recorded and made publicly available on the Kennel Club website, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Annual Testing

Eye examinations are conducted annually, as regular testing is essential for tracking changes over time and maintaining the health of breeding dogs.

Books

We recommend several books to our potential puppy owners to help prepare for bringing home a new pup and for training. Even if you’ve owned dogs before, training methods are continually evolving and improving, making it worth exploring the latest approaches.

Among the favourites Steve Mann offers an excellent range of books:

These books have received glowing feedback from our puppy owners and are a fantastic resource to ensure you and your dog have the best possible start together.

Beds

We’ve tested all of these bed types and found that both Cavaliers and Cavapoos absolutely adore doughnut beds! Not only are they cosy and supportive, but they’re also easy to clean—most can be popped into the washing machine (size permitting).

If you’re using Vet bed in a crate or as a bedding option, we recommend skipping fabric conditioner when washing. Conditioner can impact the Vet bed’s ability to wick moisture away from your puppy effectively.

Here are our top recommendations:

  • Vet bed – Practical and great for crates or as a base layer.
  • Doughnut bed – Snuggly, supportive, and a clear favourite for comfort.
  • Rectangle bed – A classic option, perfect for pups who like to stretch out.

Each option has its perks, so you can choose the one that best suits your puppy’s needs!

Crates & Playpens

Crate Training

All our puppies are ‘open door’ crate trained, meaning the crate door is open and is used as a cosy and secure space where your puppy can feel safe and comfortable.

Recommended crate types:

Playpen Setup

We also recommend using a playpen in combination with a crate. Placing the crate inside the playpen creates a safe and controlled environment for your puppy during alone time or sleep, giving them a designated space to rest and play.

Recommended playpens:

This setup helps with training and provides a structured, secure space for your puppy to thrive.

Food Storage & Water Bowls

Food Storage Bins
Perfect for storing dry food! The smaller bin is also ideal for snacks and treats.

Water & Food Bowls
Every pet needs at least two bowls – one for water and one for food. Make sure to wash them daily to help prevent upset tummies.

Hair & Teeth

Dog Hair Brushes
Daily grooming is essential, especially for breeds with long fur like Cavaliers – those lovely ears can easily get tangled!

Dog Toothbrush & Paste
Dental care is a must for dogs of all ages to keep their teeth healthy and breath fresh.

Sling & Seatbelts

Puppy Sling
An absolute game-changer! Puppy slings let your little one explore the world safely between 8–12 weeks while waiting for their vaccinations to be completed. They can experience sights, sounds, and smells – like cars, birds, and people – without the risk of walking on unprotected paths.

Dog Seatbelts
Keeping your dog safe and secure in the car isn’t just smart – it’s the law. Failing to restrain your dog properly can result in fines or points on your licence. Important: Always attach seatbelts to a harness or carrier, never a collar, to ensure your dog’s safety.

  • 2-Pack: Perfect for multiple dogs or spare belts.
  • 1-Pack: Ideal for single-dog households.

Anti Stress

Help your dog stay calm and comfortable during challenging situations like fireworks, visitors, moving to a new home, or travel.

Toys

Chew Toys
An absolute must-have to save your skirting boards (and sanity)! Perfect for keeping pups entertained and distracted.

Enrichment Toys
Keep your dog’s mind active and entertained while encouraging natural behaviours like sniffing and licking.

  • Snuffle Mat: Perfect for hiding treats and stimulating your dog’s sense of smell.
  • Licky Mat: A great way to soothe and calm your dog while providing a tasty challenge.
